How to Use the Lumber Weight Calculator

Select the wood species from the dropdown list. Choose the moisture content level — green lumber is freshly cut and heaviest, air-dried lumber has been seasoned outdoors for months, and kiln-dried lumber has the lowest moisture content and lightest weight. Enter the nominal board dimensions (thickness and width in inches), the length in feet, and the number of boards. The calculator uses actual lumber dimensions (not nominal) and species-specific density values to compute accurate weights for transportation planning, structural loading, and shipping estimates.

Formula

Volume (cu ft) = Actual Thickness x Actual Width x Length(ft) x 12 / 1728

Weight per board = Volume x Density (lbs/cu ft)

Total Weight = Weight per board x Quantity

Note: Actual dimensions account for milling (e.g., 2x6 = 1.5 x 5.5 in)

Example Calculation

10 boards of Douglas Fir 2x6, 8 ft long, kiln-dried

Actual dimensions: 1.5 in x 5.25 in

Volume per board = (1.5 x 5.25 x 96) / 1728 = 0.4375 cu ft

Density (kiln-dried Douglas Fir) = 32 lbs/cu ft

Weight per board = 0.4375 x 32 = 14.0 lbs

Total weight = 14.0 x 10 = 140.0 lbs

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 2x4x8 weigh?

A kiln-dried SPF (spruce-pine-fir) 2x4 at 8 feet weighs approximately 9-10 lbs. A pressure-treated 2x4x8 weighs about 13-15 lbs due to the chemical treatment and higher moisture content. Douglas Fir 2x4x8 weighs approximately 11-13 lbs kiln-dried.

Why does moisture content affect lumber weight?

Water is heavy — about 62.4 lbs per cubic foot. Green lumber can contain 30-200% moisture content (weight of water relative to dry wood weight). As lumber dries, it loses significant weight. A green 2x6x8 of Southern Pine may weigh 25+ lbs but only 15 lbs when kiln-dried.

What is the heaviest common lumber species?

Among common North American species, white oak is the heaviest at 44-47 lbs/cu ft (air-dried). Hickory is similar at 45-50 lbs/cu ft. Among exotic species, ipe (ironwood) reaches 62-69 lbs/cu ft, making it nearly as dense as water.

How much weight can a pickup truck carry in lumber?

A standard half-ton pickup has a payload capacity of 1,000-2,000 lbs. A full-size truck bed holds about 50-60 pieces of 2x4x8 (kiln-dried SPF), weighing approximately 500-600 lbs. Always check your vehicle's specific payload rating and distribute weight evenly.

Does pressure-treated lumber weigh more?

Yes, pressure-treated lumber weighs 50-75% more than kiln-dried untreated lumber of the same species. The treatment process forces preservative chemicals and water deep into the wood cells. A PT 2x6x12 of Southern Pine weighs approximately 35-40 lbs versus 22-25 lbs untreated and kiln-dried.

How do I estimate lumber weight for shipping?

For shipping estimates, use the kiln-dried density for finished lumber and air-dried density for rough-sawn lumber. Add 10-15% for packaging and banding materials. Most freight carriers charge by the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight (volume-based), so calculate both.
