How to Play the FLAMES Game

  1. Write both names and cancel out common letters.
  2. Count the remaining (non-cancelled) letters from both names.
  3. Use this count to eliminate letters from F-L-A-M-E-S cyclically.
  4. Start counting from F, and remove the letter you land on.
  5. Continue until one letter remains — that is your result.

Formula

1. Remove common letters from both names

2. Count = remaining letters in name1 + remaining in name2

3. Cyclically count through F-L-A-M-E-S

4. Remove the letter at position (count)

5. Repeat until 1 letter remains

Example

Name 1: "ALEX", Name 2: "ANNA"

Common letters: A (cancel one A from each)

Remaining: LEX + NNA = 6 letters

Count 6 through FLAMES, eliminate cyclically

Final letter determines the relationship

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FLAMES scientifically accurate?

No. FLAMES is a popular pen-and-paper game played for fun. It has no scientific basis for predicting relationship outcomes.

Where did FLAMES originate?

FLAMES is a popular schoolyard game that has been played for decades across many countries. Its exact origin is unknown but it became widely popular in the 1990s.

Does the order of names matter?

Yes, swapping the names can produce a different result because the letter cancellation process may differ based on order.

What does the S stand for?

S stands for Siblings (or Sister in some versions). It means you share a familial, platonic bond rather than a romantic one.

Can I use full names or just first names?

You can use either. First names are traditional, but using full names will give a different result due to more letters being involved.
